Scaling up just 15 Nordic solutions can reduce global emissions by 4 Gt
By scaling up just 15 proven Nordic solutions, countries all over the world can save 4 Gt of emissions every year by 2030 – as much as the EU produces today. The cost of this scale-up equala the amount spent in just nine days on fossil fuel subsidies. These results come from the Nordic Green to Scale study which will be launched today at the UN Climate Conference (COP 22) in Marrakech.

17 Existing Climate Solutions could cut Global Emissions by 25%
A new report by European think-tank Sitra, supported by a group of 11 world-leading institutions [1], has found that the world could cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by about 12 gigatonnes [2] in 2030, using only established and proven climate solutions. No new inventions are required, nor vast amounts of capital. The Sitra report took 17 climate solutions that have already proven successful in 36 countries, and asked what would happen if these were scaled up internationally, using realistic projections through 2030.

Sitra teamed up in 2016 with the Nordic Council of Ministers and distinguished institutions from all the Nordic countries to answer a simple question: how far could we go simply by scaling up already proven Nordic low-carbon solutions? The study proposes the international scale-up of 15 Nordic solutions to a level of adoption in 2030 that has already been achieved by one or more Nordic countries today.

The Nordic study continues the global Green to Scale work completed in 2015 with leading climate institutions from 10 different countries. The global study proposed the international scale-up of 17 low-carbon solutions to a level of adoption in 2030 that has already been achieved by some individual countries today.

The results of the global Green to Scale study show that by scaling up just 17 proven low-carbon solutions, global emissions could be cut by 12 Gt CO2 by 2030. This would already take us a long way towards closing the emissions gap.

It can be done

We already have many tools available to cut emissions.

We have solutions

Scaling up just 15 Nordic climate solutions could cut global emissions annually by 4 gigatonnes by 2030. This is equal to the current total emissions of the European Union. These add to the 17 global climate solutions which could cut current global emissions by a quarter by 2030 when scaled up globally – the equivalent of the total emissions of China and Japan combined.

Countries can do more

The results of this project show how implementing existing low-carbon solutions can take us a long way in tackling the climate crisis. Countries around the world have a range of proven and attractive solutions to choose from.
